About Us
Mission Statement
To restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ by providing a safe and loving environment, celebrating community diversity and sharing God's gifts within the Anglican tradition.
St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church is a growing, medium sized church serving the "southern crescent" of the Atlanta metropolitan area. We are a part of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta, the Episcopal Church United States of America and the worldwide Anglican Communion. Members and visitors primarily come from the surrounding communities of Morrow, Forest Park, Jonesboro, Riverdale, Stockbridge, Rex and College Park. The congregation reflects and celebrates the rich diversity of the communities we serve.
Various worship opportunities are offered each week, including two Sunday services of Holy Communion and a less formal Tuesday evening Healing and Holy Eucharist. Christian Education classes take place on Sunday mornings and Thursday evenings.
St. Augustine’s Church is active in community outreach activities and supports 11 different outreach ministries and organizations. In addition, the parish serves as the southern distribution point for Project Open Hand, an Atlanta-based organization that prepares and delivers meals to persons with HIV/AIDS and other critical illnesses. The rector and various members of the congregation deliver Meals on Wheels to senior citizens in nearby Forest Park. Our annual “Autumn Faire” is a major fun(d)raiser that allows us to give a donation to two charities each year.
We have the most wonderful First Sunday International Potluck Breakfasts where our diverse church family shares dishes from their many different cultural backgrounds. Participation in the choir, altar guild, lay readers, acolytes, social committee, fun(d)raising committee and outreach ministries is welcomed and encouraged.
The parish was founded in 1958. Initially established as a mission station in Clayton County, the first service was held on February 2, 1958 in a private home in Forest Park. The first church building, now the Founders’ Hall, was built on the property in 1960. A second building, now the main church, was completed in 1963. The third building, currently used as the parish hall, was finished in 1967.
In 1987 major renovation projects were undertaken to connect the three buildings and upgrade the parking facilities. In recent years the interiors of the buildings have been updated and renovated. In 2000 the church was completely renovated, and the number of parking spaces was doubled. The first service in the newly renovated worship space was held on All Saints’ Sunday, November 5. St. Augustine’s is the only Episcopal Church in Clayton County and anticipates continued growth and opportunity for worship and service as an Anglican parish.
We believe that our mission statement accurately reflects who we are as a worshipping community: "To restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ by providing a safe and loving environment, celebrating community diversity, and sharing God’s gifts within the Anglican tradition." We sincerely welcome all persons to come and worship with us and be a part of our ongoing life and ministry.
Come and See–Diversity in Action!
